King James wasn't that shallow. And back then people (scholars) knew Greek and Latin. They wouldn't be able to get away with doing a bad translation because everybody would know. and tell the king. who would execute them for betraying their sacred duty.
Scholars today agree that the translation is pretty good, although not perfect. As for studying Greek...
I studied French for 4 years, but I still understand a translation of Les Miserables much better than the original. You're much farther ahead reading an expert's translation than trying to understand a foreign language on your own.
and I'm glad they put subtitles in for Hiro and Ando so I don't have to understand Japanese.
