Our father, who art in Heroes, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kring-dom come, thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this Monday, our daily episode. And forgive us our fangeekiness, as we forgive those who fangeek against us. And lead us not into boring storylines, but deliver us from reality TV. For thine is the Kring-dom, and the Powers, and the glory. For ever and ever, AmeNBC.
What a great episode about dads. We've got HRG, the new father, unsure of his role in his baby daughter's life. We've got Kaito Nakamura, unloving, with no faith in his son. And we have Arthur Petrelli, Nathan and Peter's father and... maybe Sylar's as well? We have Peter on his way to kill his father, we have Nathan changing teams to side with his father, and we have Sylar murdering people in order to question his "father". Very nice dovetailing of all the characters and storylines.
I started thinking early on (before HRG's mind games) that Sylar was not a Petrelli. I thought that it was too convenient (and cool!) a plot twist for it to be real. I'm glad he's back to being evil, because I like him best that way, but I can't believe they let him kill Elle! And wow, did she ever die. Sliced open (which technically wasn't necessary: he already had her power, he could have killed her in a million different ways, really), and then torched with her own ability. That's got to sting. Still, she was an awesome character, and if they'd played her right she could have been the greatest thing to come out of the second season. Or rather, the only good thing to come out of the season. Still, I think she rocked. RIP.
My Fairy Godmother watched the episode with me this week, and as Claire met her mother 16 years in the past, she said, "Wouldn't that just be the weirdest thing?" Claire was really cute holding... herself. The special effects were fantastic with Sandra Bennet, too: she looked so young! I really liked this storyline--it was the first time in a long time I've been really entertained by Claire. And HRG didn't have his glasses yet! Jack Coleman did a great job in this episode, cornering Bonnie!Claire and insisting she spill the beans about who she really is. Was. Whatever. I've always thought it was uber-cute that Claire was the one who picked out those glasses for him. And now I'm loving the fact that she gave herself her own nickname. How sweet was that scene? This is the way I like HRG and Claire. They have really wonderful father-daughter chemistry together.
I'm loving the fact that Sylar stood up to Arthur and used his contacts to go collect a bunch of powers. Sue Landers... or Sarah Palin? Anyway, she lasted a very short time. Smart move on Sylar's part: find someone with the ability to detect lies, and then go question "Daddy" about his parentage. And boy howdy, when Sylar falls off the wagon, he really takes a flying leap off the back, doesn't he? Murdering Sue, smirking about cake, and taking out the rest of Sue's coworkers. With a smile. Creepy. Very cool, though.
Cook!Hiro was hysterical! Masi Oka is an amazing actor--most adult actors who try to act like a kid don't succeed even a little bit. He was wonderful as he eavesdropped from the other room. And one of the best, most poignant scenes of the whole season was Hiro receiving the light from his mother and missing her last moments as he looked down at his glowing hands. In essence, Hiro went back in time to kill his mother. Very sad. But very well done.
Love that Ando immediately decided he was going to be the one to get a power, be a time traveler, and save Hiro. Because we've seen the power that he ends up getting... and what he does with it. That future Hiro saw was not Ando using his ability to save him, it was him using his ability to kill him.
Angela is a piece of work, sending her powerless son to kill her mass-murdering husband. Here, honey, go get more psychologically screwed up. Don't come back without his head. Arthur's face as he realized Peter had brought a gun and the Haitian was priceless. I liked that Arthur was so powerful that he busted through the Haitian's ability enough to disable him for a sizeable chunk of time. Which, really, probably contributed to his downfall: if the Haitian hadn't been completely drained he probably could have dampened Sylar enough to prevent him from killing his non-Daddy. Actually... that might not have done much, considering Peter was willing to pull the trigger anyway. So no, nevermind. Arthur was going down that day no matter what. I loved Sylar's kiss-off at the end of the scene: "I'm not going to kill you, Peter. You don't have anything I need anymore." Ouch. Burn.
So now Sylar is the only multi-power person running around? Who is second in command at Pinehearst? Nathan? He'd be up against Angela and Primatech. I'm also assuming Sylar is now completely unattached, with no ties or allegiance to anyone. Which is always more fun with this particular character. I'm also wondering how Hiro is going to get back from the past, and where did Arthur pop Claire to? Uber!Soldier is an interesting idea, but I'm not overly impressed. I'm hoping Nathan, Tracy, and Mohinder don't pump up the rest of that group before the Primatech people can get in there to stop them...
Bits and Pieces:
* Best line of the whole episode: "Less talking. More watching." Followed by the equally hysterical: "Should I stay with me, or go with you?" * Hayden Panettiere's wig didn't look too bad this week. Good job, Hair and Make-up. * Didn't like the elevator scene with Sylar and the poor (really attractive) office worker. We didn't need that. It wasn't funny, and it stuck out oddly. * Light emanated out of Arthur when he died. I thought he'd put the Light into the Power Goop. He still had it? Where did it go? Into Peter? Into oblivion? * Too bad they're sticking all those scales on Mohinder. Sendhil is gorgeous, and I don't want him to turn into a giant lizard.
Addendum: No disrespect to Christianity intended--I was brought up saying the Our Father prayer every night before bed, and for the past week since I saw what tonight's episode title was going to be, it's been rolling around in my head all day every day. Just had to include it at the start of this post!
