Characters
The initial introduction of characters shows various returning characters from Super Smash Bros. Melee, and some newcomers. The returning characters have been updated and redefined since their last appearance. Mario, Pikachu, and Kirby have been slightly cleaned up, becoming sharper, and more defined. Link has taken on his more realistic appearance from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Fox McCloud has taken on the design shown in Star Fox Command. Samus Aran has changed the most of all; "under certain conditions", she will remove her Power Suit, taking up the name "Zero Suit Samus". Donning only her Zero Suit, she wields a gun that can transform into a laser whip.

Several newcomers make their appearance in the game as well:

  • Meta Knight: Kirby's recurring rival in the Kirby series, is the second of the series after Kirby to become a Super Smash Bros. fighter.
  • Pit: The savior of the Kid Icarus series, makes his first playable appearance since the 1987 NES classic Kid Icarus and 1991's Game Boy game Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters.
  • Wario: An antagonist of Mario, appears for the first time, wearing his WarioWare costume.
  • Snake: The main protagonist of Konami’s Metal Gear franchise, is the first third-party character to appear in a Super Smash Bros. game. Instead of guns, Snake will use a variety of explosives, including rocket launchers, and fight hand-to-hand.

Stages
The E3 trailer suggests that new stages will include the interior and exterior of a gloomy castle, the Halberd, Meta Knight's airship from Kirby Super Star; and the Battlefield stage from the first two games, which is remodeled into an island floating high above a rocky canyon. The time will pass from day to night and viceversa on that stage.

New stages shown in the Nintendo World trailer include an Angel Land stage from the Kid Icarus series that features fragile platforms and a statue of Palutena in background, a stage in the style of the Yoshi's Island games that appears to change seasons (based on Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island/Yoshi's Island DS rather than the style of Yoshi's Story as in the previous installments) , a Mario Kart stage styled after the "Mario Circuit" track theme (similar in platform arrangement to parts of Melee's Mute City, with kart-driving Shy Guys that seem to be similar to the F-Zero racers), a Pokemon Stadium stage similar to the one from Melee, and a nondescript Star Fox spaceship stage in outer space that appears to come out of hyperspace and starts to free fall towards Fox's home planet, Corneria. The Star Fox 64 version of the Great Fox, along with Arwings and Wolfens were shown flying around in the background. A stage based on Shadow Moses Island from Metal Gear Solid was also shown and is being developed by Hideo Kojima himself. In the new updated version of the Super Smash Bros. website, it has been confirmed that "many stages will undergo elaborate changes during battle", with an example of a day-to-night-to-day system given. On June 1st, 2007, the Isle Delfino Plaza from Super Mario Sunshine was announced as a playable stage.

Items/Abilities
The game introduces the ability to perform special moves, referred to as "Final Smash" moves. These abilities are used through an item bearing the Smash Bros. symbol, which are called Smash Balls.

The trailer shows Mario's, Link's, and Kirby's Final Smash moves. Mario, who is the only one seen in the trailer actually grabbing a Smash Ball, invokes a large, vertically expanding blast of fire known as the "Mario Finale", Link performs a barrage of sword slashes while Mario is trapped between two Triforce symbols, and Kirby uses his Cook ability from Kirby Super Star and Kirby and the Amazing Mirror to boil Mario in a pot. Wario and Samus have also displayed attacks that have unusual amounts of strength (a nuclear fart and a tremendous laser cannon, respectively), and Wario's has been confirmed to be an attack on his profile, though it is unknown if Samus's attack is indeed a Final Smash.

In the Nintendo World trailer, Pikachu, Wario and Snake were shown with the ability to crawl. It is unknown if every character will have this ability as only a few characters had the "wall-jump" technique in Melee.

Several new items are set to appear. The E3 trailer also shows footage of a puppy from Nintendogs attempting to climb the screen, blocking the view of the battle. Although Nintendo has confirmed that this is caused by an item, the actual item was not shown in the trailer. The official website has listed another new item known as the "Gooey Bomb", a bomb that sticks to surfaces and fighters before exploding, but can be transferred to another fighter by passing by them.

Certain items seen in Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee are also set to appear again, and some of them return with alterations. For example, the Super Scope item will return. Unlike in Melee, characters will now be able to shoot while moving and jumping; other gun-like weapons are also known to have this feature, such as the newly introduced, bazooka-like "Cracker Launcher", which shoots a wide range firework of many colors.

Music
Over 30 prominent video game composers are contributing to the soundtrack, with many creating new arrangements of classic Nintendo songs. A possibly complete list of the composers involved with the game is posted at the official site.

The main theme for Brawl was revealed in the E3 trailer as the background song, and it was created by the Final Fantasy composer, Nobuo Uematsu. It is unknown whether he will be composing additional tracks (He stated he was only hired to do the main theme, but would enjoy doing more). Additionally, opera singers Ken Nishikiori and Oriko Takahashi have also contributed to the vocal arrangement in this project. Sakurai stated that the game's music will be performed by a full orchestra with vocals in Latin. An arranged version of the main theme with no choir is present in the Nintendo World trailer; the use of this arrangement in the final game is unknown.

In the E3 trailer, an orchestrated version of the game over jingle from Metal Gear Solid plays when Snake appears at the end of the trailer.

The music from Super Smash Bros. Melee's Corneria stage is present at the end of the second trailer. It is unknown whether it will be changed or not. 'Menu 1', the score from the Super Smash Bros. Melee menus and character select screen has been remixed and orchestrated to play in the returning Battlefield stage.

Link
The hero of The Legend of Zelda series.
The design of this particular Link comes from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Link wields the Master Sword and a diverse arsenal of equipment.
Use all of his weapons to adapt to the ebb and flow of battle.

Mario
With his familiar red cap, blue overalls and bushy mustache, the world-famous "Mr. Video Game" is about to set foot on the Smash Bros. stage for the third time.

An easy-to-use character, Mario sets the standard for balance.
He overwhelms opponents with magnificent jumping action!

Gooey Bomb
The Gooey Bomb is a bomb that adheres to most things. It's an explosive encased in a gummy goo. It's a little different from a Motion Sensing Bomb in the sense that it can attach itself not only to the terrain, but also to opponents.

However, it's possible to get a Gooey Bomb that's stuck to you to stick to someone else. Touching someone as you pass by may very well cause it to migrate when you least expect it!

Pit
The protagonist in Kid Icarus. Pit's Sacred Bow of Palutena is actually two blades combined. He can separate them or unite them at will for use in battle.

The arrows Pit's bow unleashes shoot out like beams of light. Players can control the curves of their trajectories.

Pit: Special Moves
<Normal Special Move: Palutena Arrow>
Pit draws his bowstring taut...
And fires! The trajectory of the arrow can curve.

Steering up and down will bend the trajectory. His arrows travel as fast as light, though, so be quick. Very quick!

<Up Special Move: Wings of Icarus>
He's falling! Danger! ...But don't worry.
The "Wings of Icarus" allow Pit to fly freely through the sky!

In actuality, though, Pit is an angel who cannot ordinarily fly. After a while, he will fall, so be careful.

Mario: Final Smash
<Mario Finale>
So just what was that massive storm of flame Mario unleashed in the movie? That was Mario's Final Smash, the Mario Finale!
He got a Smash Ball! Mario is standing by!
Ready?
Bam! Bam! BambambambamBAM!

The explosion launches out and expands vertically as it travels, so in order to inflict the most damage possible on enemies, it's best to release this from a slight floating or midair position on either the left or right side of the screen. If Mario launches this at you, you'd better flee!

What is a Final Smash?
The Final Smash is a secret skill that can be performed but once…and only after obtaining an item called the Smash Ball, which is a precious item, indeed. The basic gist of it? I suppose you could say it’s kind of like a powerful and personalized hammer. You can look forward to experiencing the glowing personality behind each of the many Final Smashes!

Moving and Shooting
We’ve included rapid-fire items like the Super Scope once again. This time, though, you can walk and even jump while shooting these weapons! Freedom and ease of use have gotten a real upgrade. This expansion also increases your possible strategies, so fire away!

Cracker Launcher
This is a shooting item. Basically, you hold it in your arms. After you grab this item, it’ll rapidly release blast after blast of firecrackers that explode gaudily. You can walk around and jump while holding the launcher. You can also aim the launcher at different angles by tilting the Control Stick up or down. Be safe and sane when playing with fireworks.

Delfino Plaza
This is the central town of Isle Delfino, the tropical setting of Super Mario Sunshine. Wow! That blue ocean is bright on the eyes. This particular battle stage flies around the skies above the island. After a thrilling landing, it becomes a normal battle stage. This flight path repeats, providing great sightseeing and brawling. The changing scenery is so beautiful, you get absorbed in it.
