I thought it was the worst episode, ever! At times, almost painful to watch.
How can you think that? It answered so many questions about the company and it's origins. About Angela's dreams and about Charles' powers. Not to mention bringing in a much needed new and interesting character (Yeah, it's another member of the ever growing Petrelli clan. But we can overlook that due to the cool powers.) I thought it was great. Check out the Season 3 episode review for my point by point review of 1961 if you are intrested in my reasoning, or you can just take my word for it that it sucked on an epic scale!

I dont' really know what I thought of the episode. I liked the flashbacks, that was really interesting. I don't like how at least half the cast is the Petrelli family. It's really time for some new characters that have nothing to do with any of the current characters. I really did like how the characters seem to be changing now, for the better. Claire's finally realizing that she was a real dumbass earlier on, and she stopped whining so much which is a definite improvement. Nathan doesn't still think he's right about rounding up people with abilities, and wants to make an attempt to fix it. Not sure how well that's going to work with Sylar around, but whatever... Peter seems to be getting back to his old self that we saw in season one.
I know this episode was supposed to answer questions about the company, but all it really did was create more questions. From how it was presented in the episode, it seemed like the company wanted to go good and seemed like a not a bad idea. So how did it become corrupt? Where do all the other "founders" fit in? Pretty much all it showed was that a Angela, Charles, Linderman, and Bob met as teenagers, and that they wanted to start a company so that the government would never attempt to round up people with abilities again.
Overall a good episode though, seems to be starting to set up the next volume, redemption.

If I had to simply choose if I liked the episode or not, then yes, I liked it alot. I did notice a few things I thought were a little...out of place, but overall a good episode. Charles Deveaux only being having persuasion/telepathy was a let down (I hoped he would have a way better, more original power than that). To counter what others have said of their disapointment of the founding of the company, as others have said, keep in mind the four that escaped the camp are hardly more than children. Meeting the other founders, Arthur and Adam in particular, is what probably made it easy to justify the wrongs they did as a means to an end. Was the guy with the pulse power that protected Alice her and Angela's dad? I would have to say that the thing I liked the least was the end, showing Sylar acting as Nathan. First, Sylar has never touched Nathan as far as I know, making it impossible. Next, can we just please get through a season with Nathan not being in mortal danger.
