Yay! Flashback episode. Can't tell you how insanely curious I've been about how Peter got to Ireland, how he and Nathan survived the explosion, and how in the world Adam Monroe fits into all of this. All in all, I really liked this episode--it's one of the strongest of the season. Just a few pieces bothered me, but on the whole I was impressed.
First off, I've got a lot of problems with this first scene. I posited in the 2x07 review that maybe Angela Petrelli had a mirrored ability to the Haitian, and that when Peter met up with her in the future she was able to put back the memories the Haitian stole (at that point I was still assuming the Haitian's involvement because it is not until this episode that we see... but I'll get to that). But this first scene of 2x08 proves that Peter still has memory gaps--apparently he remembers family, but not recent events or other people--such as Adam. This means just the strength of Peter's affinity for his mom gave him back his partial memories? I don't like that--that's thin. Emotional connection has never been able to restore what the Haitian took from anyone else. And the continuity issues just keep a-comin', because Adam proceeds to reveal that since he can heal himself and Peter can do what others can do, Peter should be able to heal his own mind when in Adam's presence, thereby regaining his memories. Issue #1: Peter can already heal himself--he's been doing it willy nilly ever since he met Claire, and he knows he can do it now--he healed himself after being shot in Ireland. He doesn't need Adam to activate this particular power. Issue #2: Claire has the same power, and while we have yet to see her be wiped by the Haitian, I'm assuming HRG got eraser-happy at some point when Claire was little and has already done it to her before. Yet we have no evidence she's immune to it. HRG and the Haitian both threatened her with it as if they knew it would work.
Okay, on to happier topics. Might I just say it's lovely to see Season 2 Peter without Caitlin?
Love beyond love that we get to see the few moments between the Petrelli brothers lifting off and the explosion from last season's finale. Peter begging Nathan to let him go, while Nathan holds on, despite his skin erroding away into a very convincing Harvey Dent impression. And I grin like a crazy fangurl everytime I see the unconscious, free-falling Nathan swooped up mid-air by Peter. Awesome.
Nice to see the beginning of Maya and Alejandro's powers. I liked the inciting incident, and the scope of Maya's power on that first explosive demonstration of it. I think Dania Ramirerz is a fabulous actress, and I love how much of this storyline is told through subtitles (that goes for all non-English Heroes storylines--very cool). The only detractor in all of this is Alejandro. He's not a strong actor, and--I'm sorry, but it's true--he comes off as a bit of a weenie. I also think the nun aspect of Maya's initial attempts to understand what was happening to her was odd. I don't think they needed all of that. It felt like filler.
I'm quite impressed with Peter's storyline after he left Nathan at the hospital. The reveal of Elle was phenomenal, and every time I see her character I like it more. True, it's a little fanfic-ish to have the hot blonde who wants to "play" by torturing the hero, but I think they handle it very well here, and the only thing I didn't like was how familiar she was with Peter in front of her father. I'd have liked Bob to tell her to back off a couple times. The s*xy come-ons were disturbing with Daddy in the room.
Another thing the writers will have a hard time putting back into the box is that Peter has met the Haitian. They can go one of two ways with this: either Peter is now able to erase people's minds and suppress others' powers, or the Haitian was able to adequately suppress Peter's absorbing ability well enough the entire time that he was never able to absorb the Haitian's particular powers. I like this explanation better, because at this point dear little Pete is getting to be a little too powerful to be interesting. What can't he do at this point? Other than keep that long greasy Season 1 hair out of his eyes?
Peter and Adam's months of through-the-wall friendship were great; very well done. I'm just wondering why the Company didn't make those cells sound-proof. Seems like they wouldn't want Adam making any more dangerous people his friends.
Niki's stint in LA as Gina bothered me a lot. This part of the story seemed really slapped together. Gina popped out of nowhere, the scene in the club was fast and thin, and if DL could phase a punch through his head he should be able to do the same with a bullet he saw coming. Dumb to have him live through last season's finale just to die in the flashback episode this season. I know Niki needed to be pushed into her treatment and alliance with the Company, but I'm sure they could have come up with something better than this.
The final showdown outside Nathan's hospital was fabulous. I'm glad they explained Nathan's miraculous recovery (nicely setting up something similar for the season finale...), and everything filled in the gaps beautifully, making the season seem much more cohesive up to this point. They even explained Peter's gratuitous shirtlessness when he was found in the shipping container in the premiere! The Haitian and Peter's fight scene was awesome; very well done by both actors. What I don't understand is why he gave Peter the necklace if he didn't want him to have any clue about where he came from? Side note: I'm impressed that Milo climbed that wall of metal sheeting and jumped the drop himself--a lot of actors would get a stunt double for that. Well done.
Bits and Pieces:
* I want Elle's entire wardrobe. * I'm glad they got rid of Heidi, but the way Angela did it makes me think she's got the power of persuasion in her bag of tricks... Is this how she manipulated Nathan for so long? The biggest problem I have with Angela having a power is that whatever she can do, Peter should be able to do, too, and he hasn't come up with any unexplainable powers.
