Powers & Abilities
When high on heroin, Isaac has "painted the future." A TV Guide article reveals that he will soon try to find out if his power works without using heroin.
Character History
Isaac Mendez is an struggling, tortured artist who lives in New York City. He is also the boyfriend of Simone Deveaux. By his own admission, Mendez is addicted to heroin, although he has been through rehab twice. From a time of at least three weeks before his appearance in the first episode, the paintings that he has done while high are apparently depicting future events.
When he realizes this, he tells Simone of his intentions to quit heroin cold turkey, which she objects to due to the danger of his quitting that way. Simone returns later in the episode to find that he has instead overdosed. She calls in Peter Petrelli, a nurse who is taking care of her father, to help Mendez. Peter sees Isaac's painting of a man who looks strikingly similar to Peter jumping off of a building and seemingly flying, which later sways the nurse to attempt the same thing.
During the second episode, fellow main character Hiro Nakamura, a time manipulator, discovers a divergent future timeline set a little over five weeks from October second in which Mendez has been killed. The artist's corpse is shown with the top of his head having been sliced off. Near his body is a gun that resembles one wielded by Mohinder Suresh. The episode does not feature Isaac in the present.
In One Giant Leap, Isaac has recovered and has come to cope with the fact that he is "painting the future". Simone, however, does not believe Isaac's assertions about his paintings and is more concerned with Isaac meeting the deadline for his comic book, 9th Wonders. She has also thrown out all his heroin, hoping he'll get help for his addiction. Isaac believes he needs it to paint the future. These disputes ultimately leads to their break-up. Later, Isaac is shown examining a drawing he made weeks before of a couple kissing which matches the actual event of Peter Petrelli and Simone kissing in the rain.
Some time afterward in Collision, Simone comes to Isaac requesting new paintings for a showing at her art gallery. Isaac offers earlier works instead, saying that he needs the newer ones to tell the future. Simone doubts she could even sell the older ones and is still unconvinced of Isaac's powers. Isaac proclaims he knows about her and Peter. Simone assumes Isaac followed her, but he shows her his drawing, saying he made it seven weeks ago. Isaac then says he needs money for "painting supplies" (heroin), which will hopefully help him find a way to stop the nuclear explosion. Simone leaves and a largely unfazed Isaac breaks out his "tools" to shoot up.
He is last seen during a heroin-induced daze, painting future events as they appear in his mind.
