D.L. Hawkins Discussion

Powers & Abilities

D.L Hawkins has the ability to phase through solid objects. He first displays these powers in episode five's on-line graphic novel, which details his escape. While being questioned by police, D.L. snaps when an arrogant officer makes a crude remark about Niki. D.L. unwittingly phases out of his handcuffs and nearly chokes the man. Later, after at least one failed attempt, D.L. manages to phase out of his jail cell.

By the sixth episode, he seems to have become much more adept with his powers. He easily uses them to spy on others and enter Niki's home while under heavy guard. He can even use them combatively, though not without certain dangers to his opponent. When Hawkins passes through something, its surface will warp slightly, like a liquid in slow-motion.

Character History

The father of Micah Sanders and estranged husband of Niki Sanders, DL once led a crew of men who all wore skull rings. Ultimately, he left the gang before the robberies and murders of which he is accused occurred. Among these charges is the very murder of his crew. Frustrated by police and his general situation, he discovered he possessed the ability to phase through solid matter. Although he does not consider it freedom, D.L. used his power to escape prison in hopes of clearing his name and protecting his family.

As of the third episode, his mother Paulette and son have both apparently been in contact with him. According to them, he has recently escaped prison. They also believe him innocent, although Niki feels otherwise. According to the Heroes webcomic, in the fifth "issue" titled "Snapshots", he was framed. D.L. has no idea who would wish to do this.

D.L. makes his first appearance in the series near the end of "Hiros", the fifth episode. Niki's home has been placed under heavy guard by police because of the likelihood that he'll come to her. Despite this, D.L. gets inside and is seen watching her and Micah.

In the sixth episode, D.L. returns home to Niki and Micah. He tries to convince Niki that he is innocent and travels with her to an undisclosed facility. Within, they find the mutilated corpses of several men. After Niki and D.L. return home, D.L. finds out that Niki was the one that framed him and took the $2 million. D.L. does not know that Niki actually has an alternate personality and that it framed him. D.L. and Niki's alter ego start a fight and it ends with D.L. using his phasing abilities to reach inside Niki's body and choke her from the inside-out. As D.L. runs, taking a worried Micah and the money away from Niki, it is unclear if she was knocked unconscious or mortally wounded.

In the seventh episode, D.L. and Micah are on the road, driving far away from Niki. Micah is upset that they left her, but D.L. says they can't go back. They are then stopped by a crashed and burning car on the road. D.L., after cautioning Micah to stay back, went up to the car to discover a young woman in the passenger seat. After failed attempts to open her door without using his powers, he passes his hand through the glass. Though he is able to get the woman out of the car, it was Hiro Nakamura who managed to stop time before the car explodes and push them out of the way. Afterward, Micah is proud of D.L.'s heroism. That night, they stop at a motel. Though Micah sneaks out to "play" with a pay phone, a sign says it is out of order and D.L. believes Micah's claims that he didn't call anyone.
